Christmas Visit with Tyler

Ty came for a short visit for Christmas break.

We picked him up at the airport a few days before Christmas Day.

It was great to see him!

We took him to see the pyramids at Teotihuacan.

We went over to the Visitor's Center for a visit, saw the displays and

We went to La Onda for tacos al pastor, gringas and

Delaware punch. (Ryan's favorite drink!)

We have a brand new Best Buy store near us, so we went over there to do some shopping and they had drums set up for people to try.

We talked Ty into trying it. He's still really good!

We went to Santa Fe mall and got to see Santa and a couple of elves

doing a little dance for all the shoppers. (I think this was a first for all 3 of us)

Miscellaneous Pics part 2

The church traded in the TrailBlazer for a brand new Toyota Sienna.

It had 30 kilometers on it when we received it. (That's only 18 miles!)

It has lots of great features, but the thing we love the most is the compass. In between the TrailBlazer (which had a compass) and this van, we had a loaner van with no compass. We got more lost one night than we had ever been.

We were roaming around the city for an hour and a half with no clue which direction we were going. We finally stumbled upon a street that was familiar to us and that's how

we finally made it home. A compass is an absolute essential in this city!

We take the new missionaries to a restaurant called "La Onda" for tacos al pastor.
The tacos are really good and the missionaries love going there.
The office elders and the assistants go with us, too. It's a lot of fun.



This is Elder and Sister Bailey from Salt Lake. They went with us to La Onda the night before they returned home. They served a CES mission up in Pachuca for 18 months.

A few miscellaneous pics

This is an apartment building we pass by on the way to the southeast part of the mission. It looks like an abandoned building to me, but there are actually a lot of people living in it.

This is a street in the worst part of our mission and the city. It's called Chimalhuacan. Not pretty.

This lovely lady is one of the "Katarina's" that are all over the place for "Dia de los Muertos" or Day of the Dead, which is November 1st and 2nd. I think maybe they should call it Night of the Dead because they stay all night in the cemtery from the 1st to the 2nd. They decorate the cemetery using orange marigold flowers and the favorite foods of the people that have died. I don't think it is connected to Halloween, but the orange and black color scheme is the same, and the skeletons kind of fit in with that, too.

I'm not an animal lover, but I do feel sorry for the dirty little dogs running all over the place. It makes me wonder what they did to deserve a life like this.

Time Flies!

200 days to go! We've been gone for 896 days and have 200 more to go! There is so much to do and not a lot more time to do it. We'll keep on going - but when the time comes we'll be ready! :)

Zone Leaders Council for December

The 2 Assistants and 16 Zone Leaders are here again today for the consejo. They came in from their areas last night and slept in the lower level of the mission home. We have 20 bunkbeds downstairs, and only two bathrooms. Pretty tight schedule for showering!

Last night they ate 7 pizzas and drank 18 bottles of caffeine free diet Coke. This morning they were joined by the 5 secretaries and for breakfast they had six dozen eggs, 100 slices of bacon, 1 gallon of refried beans, 150 tortillas, 25 containers of yogurt, and 25 sweet rolls. They washed it down with 3 gallons of juice.

Today for lunch they'll have 50 portions of milanesa, a mountain of mashed potatoes, and about 1 1/2 gallons of gravy. Also one very large bag of mixed vegi's and 6 large cans of fruit cocktail and 8 loaves of french bread. They'll have water to drink, (we go through about 60 bottles of water) and about 6 dozen homemade cookies for dessert (the senior sisters over at the visitor's center helped me out with these!). They also went through 40 juice boxes, 23 granola bars, and various other things I send with them for the trip back to their areas. Missionaries are always hungry!

It is a great meeting though, el Presidente's favorite. They meet together to discuss the direction of the mission, and plan the training for the coming cycle. These missionaries are the hardest working elders we have here and they do a great job.

Next time they will meet at the stake center by the temple. There is much less travel for them, and they also only have lunch together on these days. It is much easier for me when they meet at the stake center since they eat at the MTC cafeteria, (I do provide some snacks, though) but I enjoy having them here - they are a wonderful group of missionaries.

Since we only have four more consejo's before July 1st, two will be here, and two will be at the stake center. Hard to believe the time is going by so fast!

Happy Thanksgiving

Before the day is over I just wanted to say how thankful I am for the many blessings I have. I'm sure I couldn't ever name them all.

It has been a blessing for Russ and I to be here in Mexico, and serving with the missionaries here. We've learned so much and had so many wonderful experiences that have affected our lives. We've associated with some wonderful people - it's amazing how kind and helpful everyone is to us. The missionaries have been great - and they keep us on our toes. We never get bored!

We have also learned how very much our wonderful family means to us. Although we've been apart for quite some time, we feel very close to all of you. We feel your prayers, your love, and support as we continue to serve here. We could not do this without each one of you. The emails, pictures, letters and phone calls mean so much. I'm thankful for family blogs, too! It really helps to be able to see what is going on back at home.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving day, and I must say that we are looking forward to next year's Thanksgiving day very anxiously! Love to all of you.....

It's a Boy for Chad and Joey!!!!!

So Russ said girl and I said boy - and I was right! We are so excited and happy to hear the great news about Chad and Joey's baby - It's a BOY! Not really a big surprise to me :) Everything on the ultrasound looks great, and we'll be so thrilled to welcome him here to earth at the beginning of April.

I sent a few questions to Ryan this week, here are his replies.....

Have you eaten any unusual food, and did you like it?
OH HAVE I! I eat a lot of sheep meat and spinach and squash and sweet potatoes. however, I eat a ton of fruit and I love all kinds. You might be surprised to know that peaches and mandarines are some of my favorites. I hate tomatoes still but salads are alright. Beets lurch my stomach a bit in the salads but you know what i do...i pray that it will all go down right :)

(One time we went to a stake meeting here and they served us some sandwiches for lunch - with mayonnaise on them. Ryan hates mayonnaise, but didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, so he said that he started praying that he wouldn't gag :) Also, I can't believe he would eat spinach, squash and sweet potatoes. Peaches and mandarines are his favorite? Miracles really do happen on a mission! :)

Do you cook food sometimes, and what do you make?
Rarely, and if i do, its usually some pasta with a simple sauce or some rice with chicken. i usually ¨just get myself a bowl of cereal¨

(I wonder where he heard "just get yourself a bowl of cereal? ;)

What is your apartment like? Is your mattress OK?
My apartment is all good. Its alot like camping but I like it. We clean alot because the mold gets everywhere. My mattress is my best friend.

Is your mission doing "Companionship Language Study" (native Spanish
speakers learning English)?
Yes we are doing that and Sister Da Silva spoke about that in our zone conference this week which was great.

Is Elder Cardona learning English?
He is now that he knows its a commandment out of Preach My Gospel :)

A Visit from St. Nicholas?

Chad came to visit for the weekend, and it was so good to see him! He also brought lots of great things from home, (Like chocolate, licorice, and perfume :) It was just like Christmas!

He and Russ went to the Priesthood meeting together, and then broke with tradition and took me with them to dinner at Blossom - our absolute favorite Chinese restaurant.

Thanks for coming Chad - we loved having you here!

We are so excited and happy that Chad and Joey are expecting their first baby!!!! It's due the first part of April and we can't wait!!!!!

Mission President's Seminar in Mexico City

We attended our third and final Mission President's Seminar a few days ago. It was great to see the other couples that are from our "generation" and will finish at the same time we do next year. From left to right, Pres. & Hna Cardenas, serving in Merida; Pres. & Hna Mendoza, serving in Monterrey East; Pres & Hna Fuentes, Mexico City West; Pres. & Hna Flores, in Chihuahua; Pres. & Hna Johnstun, Culiacan, Pres. & Hna Cox, serving in Leon, and us :)

This our new Area Presidency along with Elder and Sister Christofferson. The President is Elder Daniel Johnson and his wife, Elder Benjamin De Hoyos as first counselor, and also his wife, and Elder and Sister Tenorio, he is still the second counselor, he was in the previous Area Presidency as well. Elder Gonzalez of the Presidency of the Seventy is here, too.

This is Elder Walter Gonzalez of the Presidency of the Seventy. He is from Uruguay, it was so fun to hear his beautiful accent! He is a very, very nice man.

We got to have a picture with Elder and Sis. Christofferson when we were at the Visitor's Center. The whole group attended the temple together and it was an awesome experience. We are so blessed to associate with these wonderful people.

We are supposed to be getting a digital copy of the picture that was taken with the whole group - all the mission presidents and their wives from Mexico (21), the Area Presidency, Christoffersons, and Elder Gonzalez. When we receive the picture, I'll post it.

Baptisms in Uruguay :)

Ryan sent these two pictures today.

They are his first two baptisms. This is the baptism of Andrea

(I'm not sure which one is Andrea though)

And this is Sebastian.

Also his first companion and trainer, Elder Cardona from Honduras.

He looks happy and healthy. He's already been out for one month!

We also got news today that anyone can send an email to the mission office, they will print it off and deliver it to Ryan. This is a new thing for their mission, and should be a really good thing. Since Ryan only is allowed to email 30 minutes per week, this seems like a good thing for him to be able to read the letters separately, and then write his own email during the 30 minutes.

Kidney Stone

Our plans for this past week didn't really turn out the way we thought they would. We had scheduled 3 days of Zone Conferences and interviews, but on day 2 - during the afternoon interviews - a new kidney stone made it's presence known.

Wednesday Russ was interviewing Elder Budge, a brand new missionary from Utah, and suddenly he felt a familiar pain, just like two years ago when he had his first experience with this. He tried to continue with the interview, but the pain was just too much. He had the Zone Leaders, Elder Flores and Elder Winters give him a blessing, and off we went to the hospital.

Thursday Dr. Torres did the surgery and retrieved the stone that was causing so much pain and trouble:


It's very tiny compared to the penny - but I guess it's pretty big for a kidney stone. Not fun.

Russ came home from the hospital on Friday and is doing MUCH better now. Dr. Torres wants to analyze the stone and find out what causes Russ' body to form them. Hopefully he can avoid having another one.

MTC in Argentina

Well, we didn't get an email from Ryan today (so far) - but I checked on the Argentina MTC website and they posted the picture of his group. He's on the end of the third row. Hopefully we'll get an email later today or tomorrow.

Airport Problems

Well, Ryan has safely arrived in Argentina, we've received the first email and he is doing well. We were a little surprised that he will be in the 3 week program instead of the 8 week program, but I'm sure they tested him and know what they are doing down there. :)

The airport thing has been so weird for the last 3 trips. The first one, we missed picking up Tyler, due to a lot of confusion and flight delays. Next, on the way to the airport last Wednesday we realized we had forgotten Ryan's passport, and had to go back and get it, and in Mexico City you can't just turn around and go back, you have to go a completely different route - a route we had never gone before. We made it back in time, but it was REALLY stressful.

Then yesterday, we had an Elder from Argentina scheduled to go home with a flight at 10 pm. The secretaries came to the temple at 7 pm to pick him up and take him to the airport (about 15 minutes away). They realized they had forgotten his passport and visa, so had to go all the way back to the office, and then to the airport. Traffic was very heavy and they didn't make it back in time. We'll try to get him home tonight on the 10 pm flight.

I've heard that things like this come in three's - so I hope this is it for a long time :)

Set Apart

Ryan has been packing his things the last few days -

his room is all cleaned out, his closet is almost totally empty.
He was set apart tonight by President Allen Walker, the second counselor in the Chapultepec Mexico Stake. It was a beautiful blessing and setting apart. He is ready to go!

We received it in the mail a few days ago, and he'll be
wearing as he travels to Argentina.
He is now officially Elder Bulloch :)

Our Last Missionary is Ready To Go

Ryan has been getting lots of things ready for his mission - and with the help of lots of family (especially Grandma and Grandpa A) he has almost everything ready to go. This past week we held four days of Zone Conferences and Ryan gave a talk in each one. He even gave his talk in Spanish! He did a wonderful job, and will be a great missionary.

After the Zone Conferences, the missionaries (who are almost like his brothers here in Mexico) all wanted to talk to him and wish him well. A lot of the American missionaries told him how great he was doing with his Spanish, and assured him that it won't be long until he is fluent!

We will really miss him, but are so happy for him to get started on this amazing experience as a full time representative of the Lord Jesus Christ in Uruguay.

Two Years in Mexico

Today marks two years for us serving here in the Mexic0 City East Mission. It has been a great experience and we have learned so much. We continue to have wonderful missionaries arrive to serve and even more wonderful and mature missionaries that depart.


We're holding Zone Conferences this week - and yesterday we were driving out to the Los Reyes Stake Center. We spotted a truck up ahead of us with some weird looking stuff in it. As we got closer, we couldn't believe what we saw :) Another first for us here, even after two years.

Wouldn't you like him to deliver some of these good looking chickens to your next BBQ???!!!

KFC better watch out, I'm sure these chickens have a flavor that can't be matched!!!!!

Last Week of Reading for the 90 Day Study

I just realized this morning that I hadn't been posting the reading schedule for the last two weeks. Sorry about that. Here are the last few chapters to finish up our 90 day study program.

Saturday: Ether 12-13
Sunday: Ether 14-25, Moroni 1-5
Monday: Moroni 6-7
Tuesday: Moroni 8-10

It's been a great experience to read and study this way. I've really enjoyed starting over with a "clean" copy to mark. It's amazing to actually see how many references there are to the Savior in almost every page. What a blessing this sacred record is.

Reunion in Mexico

It's been a great reunion here in Mexico. Friday was kind of a long, wild day, but a really good one. We weren't sure which plane Tyler was actually on - and were told that he would arrive on Saturday morning at 5 am instead of Friday evening at 7:15. But guess what - he made the connecting flight (running at full speed in Heathrow airport in London) and he's here! We've been doing a lot of catching up with everyone. We also went to a small city called Ixtapan de la Sal for 3 days. It was a lot of fun. Here are a few of the 170 pictures I've taken in the last few days: :)
